Changes Coming for Colorado National Medal Finals

The Colorado National Medal Finals will move this year from the High Prairie Fall Classic Horse Show and will join the CHJA Medal Finals Horse Show at the National Western Events Center. In view of this change, the Board adopted an extraordinary rule change to allow the Colorado National Medal Finals to be held in a three phase format which is the same format used for the CHJA Medal Finals. It is the hope of the Equitation Committee and the Board that these changes will allow the Colorado National Medal Finals riders to have a richer medal finals experience. The Medal Finals will be held September 23-26, 2010. Planning is underway to make the combined medal finals a very special event.

Rule Book Error

The 2010 CHJA Rule Book contains errors in Rules 9.3 E and 9.3 G. Due to the recognition of the Low Children's and Low AA Jumper Divisions for year end awards, the following wording should be deleted from these rules as it no longer applies: "If two divisions are offered, ie Low Children's (AA) and Children's (AA), only the division within the defined specifications for the class will count for points. Should both divisions be set within the specifications for the class, only the higher level will count for points. The fence height published in the prize list will be used to determine the fence heights at which the classes are held".

The Rules and Specs Committee apologizes for any confusion caused by this error. Please contact Carol O'Meara at 303 779-4963 or carolomeara@aol.com with any questions.

CHJA Board Passes Rule Changes

by Carol O'Meara, Rules and Specs Chair

At their October 5, 2009 meeting, the CHJA Board debated a Bylaws Change as well as 33 Rule Change Proposals. The Bylaws change will allow the Rule Change Proposals to be communicated to the membership by means other than mail. This means that next year, the Rule Change Proposals will be posted on the CHJA Web Site and will be "snail mailed" only to those who request a copy. This change will save both money and trees.

The rule changes covered a variety of topics. Notification of shows will no longer require the mailing of a prize list or post card. Notification may also be made via Show Schedule on the CHJA Web Site with a link to download the Prize List, or via the Show Schedule in the CHJA Newsletter. Show secretaries will now be required to notify the Membership Chair even if there are no new memberships within 5 days of the show.

Point Counting for Group 2 and Group 3 Classes will no longer be based on the competitor's Top 10 Shows. Points earned at all shows attended by a competitor will count. It will be required for classics to be conducted as a two round class. Designated classes may be counted as the first round of the classic, and the second round must be held as a separate round.

Several new divisions have been approved for yearend awards. In Group I, there will be year end awards for 3'3" Amateur Owner Hunters, High and Low Junior Jumpers, High and Low Amateur Owner Jumpers. Low Children's Jumpers, and Low Adult Amateur Hunters will also be added to the list of year end awards. In Group II, CHJA Medium Stirrup Hunters, at 2'3", will be open to juniors, and CHJA Long Stirrup Hunters at 2'3" will be open to amateurs, and there will be year end awards for these new divisions. Beginner Juniors will now be divided by age groups for year end awards: 14 and under and 15-17. The Arapahoe Hunter Derby will also be added to Group II, with points to accumulate toward a special year end trophy and a one-year membership to the Arapahoe Hunt.

Changes in the rules will allow classes to be combined at shows, reducing the need for cancelling classes because they did not fill. CHJA Junior and CHJA Amateur Classes may be combined, and Beginner Junior and Beginner Amateur Classes may be combined.

Eleven and under riders should be aware of several rule changes in their divisions.

Short Stirrup classes will not contain oxers. The same horse/rider combination competing in the Short Stirrup Division may not compete in any other hunter or jumper division at the same show.

In Beginner Equitation, 11 and under riders may not cross enter into CHJA Junior Equitation 11 and under at the same show.

Several rule changes will appear in the Jumper Divisions. All of the fence heights in the Jumper Divisions will be stated in both meters and in feet and inches. CHJA Open Jumpers will be 1.15M (3'9") minimum first class.

Medal riders should be aware that the CHJA Medal Finals will be restricted to qualified riders who have not participated in any of the  Colorado National Medal Finals during the current qualifying year. Riders qualifying for both finals will therefore need to choose which finals in which they wish to compete. They may not compete in both finals.

Rule changes will take effect on December 1, 2009. Please contact Carol O'Meara at carolomeara@aol.com or 303 779 4963 if you have any questions about the rule changes.
